What’s the difference between registration, licenses, permits, and tax permits?
It can be confusing to create and run a business when the words license, permit, and registration are sometimes used interchangeably. This can help you understand how they apply to your business:
Business registration is the process of officially establishing your business with the appropriate government authorities. If you’re starting a small business, you need to register with the State of CT and your municipality.
Tax permits: You also need to register your business with CT’s Division of Revenue Services (DRS). When you do, you’ll get a list of the tax permits you need.

Business licenses, permits, and certifications: Many types of businesses and professions need a license to do business.
